Hand cut, Aluminium plate etching with aquatint.
This plate has been cut out by hand using a jewellery saw, this is a lengthy and intricate process. To make the etched marks the plate is then coated with wax and lines are scratched into the wax, then the plate is immersed in a bath of copper sulphate many many times to etch the lines and tones of the image.
The colours are adding 'a la poupe' this means adding colours during the inking stage and blending them during the wiping of the plate. Each print takes long time to print.
