Hand cut Copperplate, aquatint etching
Jenny McCabe, 2024
All my work starts with drawing - I aim to capture the movement and energy of the birds.
To make the etched marks the plate is then coated with wax and lines are scratched into the wax, then the plate is immersed in a bath of ferric chloride many many times to etch the lines and tones of the image.
The etching plate has then been cut out by hand using a jewellery saw, in a lengthy and intricate process.
The colours are added during the inking stage and blending them during the wiping of the plate.
Each print takes time to print and is not a process one can rush.
